Q & A:
What are Lactase Infant Drops?
The active ingredient in Lactase Infant Drops is Lactase, a naturally occurring enzyme in the body.
What is Lactose and how does it work?
Some products such as milk, infant formulas, breast milk and other dairy products contain a complex sugar called lactose. Lactase is the enzyme that our bodies typically produce to break down lactose into more simple sugars allowing us to absorb it.
Undigested lactose:
Some babies can have trouble breaking down lactose in their first few months of life. This can be a key factor for some babies with colic. Your doctor or health visitor can tell you more about how this may affect your baby. As your baby grows and it’s digestive system matures (at around 3 months) you should be able to gradually reduce the use of Lactase Infant Drops until they are no longer needed.
When can Lactase Infant Drops be used?
Lactase Infant Drops can be used from birth onwards. They should only be used for as long as it takes the infant to produce enough of its own lactase enzyme as the gut develops - typically at around 3 - 4 months.
